1. Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is a comprehensive term that includes all kinds of yoga that is based in physical practice. So that includes styles like Ashtanga and Iyengar but not Kriya, Raja, or Karma yoga that are not based on physical yoga practice. Hatha yoga is best if you are just starting out as the pace is far slower than the other styles. The practice involves having to hold a pose Hatha classes for a few breaths and focuses a lot of meditation and correct breathing and postures. You will also learn some essential relaxation techniques.

2.Iyengar Yoga

Founded by B.K.S. Iyengar, this form of yoga is great for those who want to work on injuries and joint problems. It focuses on correct alignment of the body and very precise moves. These postures are held while holding your breath and the duration of each pose increases with expertise. The perfect pose is achieved with the help of props like traps, blocks, and blankets. This practice great improves stability, mobility , strength and flexibility.

3.Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini yoga is one of those mysterious yoga practices that is as spiritual as it is physical. This form is physically demanding and mentally challenging and involves a lot of meditation, chanting, mudras and breathing exercises. The whole point if this style is to release the kundalini energy that is coiled in the lower spine. You have to do a lot of fast moving postures with periods of relaxation where you will be taught to pay attention to internal sensations and the flow of creative energy so that you can tap into your kundalini-shakti. This style is for those who are looking for more than a workout.

4.Ashtanga Yoga

Popularised by celebrities worldwide, Ashtanga or the “eight limb path” is very physically demanding so you should not do this if you are a beginner or not in great physical shape. It involves doing multiple surynamaskars followed by standing and floor postures. There are six series of postures that have to be repeated in every class. This kind of yoga is also called Power Yoga and in this style you start with the primary series and then graduate to the next level when you have mastered it. It takes years of practice to master this form.

5.Vinyasa Yoga

This is an offshoot of Ashtanga and also involves a number of athletic yoga postures and each movement is coordinated with one’s breath. This is also a very physically demanding practice. The pace is quick and you will not have to hold any one pose for too long. The key is to flow from one pose to the next so your heart rate gets pumping. Both Ashtanga and Vinyasa are great if your aim is to tone your body. It also works your core and upper body and gives you a cardio workout. This practice does not have a set structure and often depends on the teacher who might include some meditation and chanting.

DIFFERENT YOGA STYLES AND THEIR BENEFITS

The beauty of yoga is that it can be traditional, sacred and deep but also playful, experimental and adaptable. There are some who are all for yoga and its Zen approach to life and then there are others who can’t do without the instant rush of their treadmills and dumbbells. There’s a lot that has been said and written about yoga. This holistic approach to fitness and mental health has been evolving continuously to fit into our lifestyles and keep things fresh. If the classic hatha and ashtanga varieties don’t work for you, Samreen Samad fills you in on the latest hybrid yoga trends.

The West is obsessed with yoga and its benefits and apart from trying the classic styles, many trainers have come up with newer styles that certainly become a rage if they pack in the right amount of fitness and fun. While we may not have all of them in India right now, we are sure there will be classes very soon thanks to all the buzz these have created already. If traditional yoga bores you and you need some excitement in your workouts, here are the classes to sign up for and learn the modern way to do yo
ga.

1.Aqua Yoga

Aqua Yoga for health

With the soaring temperatures in summer, hitting the pool seems the obvious choice and this yoga style combines your love for water and fitness. Water babies will love their yoga class moving into a swimming pool. Water reduces the stress put on joints and makes you more flexible. It is great for those suffering from back problems, arthritis and stiff joints. Stretching in water increases your lung capacity and also has a calming effect. Aqua yoga involves doing the same asanas in a pool and can be done by people of all ages. Even aged and pregnant women can try this yoga style as it is less intense in nature. Aqua yoga is also good for the differently-abled who need wheelchair assistance. It is a low-impact workout and helps in toning muscle and improving joint movements.

2. Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga

Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga for health

While this yoga trend hasn’t gained popularity in India—blame it on the weather and lack of clean beaches—it is a rage abroad. Stand up paddleboard yoga is a combination of yoga and surfing. One is required to do a sequence of asanas standing on a surfboard. By working on an unstable surface, you strengthen your core and muscles that are not used much in a regular yoga class. Instructor Sunaina Rekhi confirms this is very good for improving balance, concentration, strength and flexibility. SUP yoga is slowly gaining more followers especially during surfing festivals in the country. With the growing demand, many classes have come up in coastal areas like Goa, Pondicherry, where there is no dearth of beaches. Many tourists who visit these places also opt for a session or two of SUP yoga to learn the basics of balancing themselves on a surfboard.

3. Anti-Gravity Yoga

Anti-Gravity Yoga for health

Anti-gravity or aerial yoga combines Pilates, dance, yoga and—wait for it—gymnastics! Performed on a hammock, this is a full-body workout. You fight gravity throughout the session and this helps improve balance and flexibility. You may have seen many popular Bollywood celebs take to this trend and share photos of themselves doing yoga poses suspended in mid-air with the help of the silk ropes. Even though it may look fun, anti-gravity yoga requires a lot of core strength and strong arms, to be able to lift yourself up. Sunaina says, “Anti-gravity yoga involves lengthening and strengthening of your back and aligns your body from head to toe. This ensures all parts are stretched.” Tanvi Mehra, yoga instructor and owner of Tangerine Arts Studios, Mumbai, says, “Aerial yoga brings newness, fun and a new level of challenge and intensity to the traditional practice.”

4. Ballet Yoga

Ballet Yoga for health

The first thing that pops in your mind when you think of ballet is grace, flexibility and posture. Ballet dancers are known for their toned, slender built and they surely have amazing stamina and strength. Ballet yoga combines the fundamentals of both to create lean muscles. Sunaina says, “Integrating ballet and yoga together helps in strengthening and toning the body.” Ballet yoga is also a low intensity workout and can be performed by kids as well with some assistance. Since ballet dancers start young, it is encouraged that this yoga style be taken up by children as it can help them learn two forms at once. Ballet yoga is mainly done in a studio using a ballet barre. However, there are online tutorials as well that can help you get a start at home. The good thing about this yoga style is that it is relaxing but at the same time effective too.

5.Hip Hop Yoga

 Hip-Hop Yoga for health

Get your groove on by incorporating this fun form of yoga into your routine. Hip hop is a fun but intense dance form and combining it with yoga makes it even more exciting. Sunaina says, “This is for people who want to add a fun element to their class.” The sessions have music blaring and are very energetic. The choreography is dynamic and meant to inspire you and lift you up while you move. Sunaina says, “It’s popular among the younger generation and it really stretches you out.” Tanvi adds, “Hip hop yoga inculcates a community spirit as it is done in tandem with another person or in a group which creates a beautiful, collective energy.” Yoga and hip hop together offer the best of both worlds—a total body workout and a release for the mind and spirit. The pumping beats and the fast-paced music makes this a high-intensity workout. Hip hop yoga is more popular with the younger generation who not only enjoy this style but also want a workout that burns more calories in a quick time.
